PAPER HEART IRON GRIP DIAMOND GEEZER JUDOKA Wayne Lakin
Highly accomplished former British and Commonwealth Judo Champion, 1996 Olympic reserve, and 4th Dan black belt who now works as an elite Judo Strength & Conditioning coach and fitness manager Wayne Lakin talks to Mick Tully about his journey in martial arts from starting as a bullied kid to success as a British and Commonwealth Judo Champion, being an Olympic reserve, and coaching high level athletes in multiple sports to running his own gym and still training in disciplines such as BJJ. He powerfully and openly discusses Imposter Syndrome, accepting the ageing process and confronting his own doubts and failings.
Wayne Lakin says, “on the outside, I have looked strong, composed, and capable. Inside, I’ve often felt fragile, uncertain, and unworthy. That’s the paper heart, but over more than ten years as a full time judo athlete, fifteen years working the doors in high pressure environments, and twenty years immersed in gyms and elite spaces, I’ve cultivated an iron grip, a mental, physical, and emotional strength that lets me perform under pressure, endure when others would give up, and push further than most could imagine.”
As Mick Tully says, “What a diamond geezer!”
