Jones vs. Miocic took place Nov. 16 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Charles Oliveira (35-10, 1 no-contest) and Michael Chandler (23-9) squared off in the co-main event clash. The fight aired live on pay-per-view on ESPN+.

Round 1

Keith Peterson the referee for the five-round co-main event.

Front kick by Oliveira to start. Chandler advancing with a jab. Oliveira with another front kick to the body. They trade jabs. Right hand from Oliveira scores. Beautifully timed takedown by Oliveira. Chandler with good balance, but Oliveira explodes with power again and ends up on top after an unorthodox scramble.

Oliveira has Chandler’s leg trapped under on arm as he sits on Chandler. That’s not a position you see every day. Chandler keeping a triangle around Oliveira’s leg and arm, which is keeping him from advancing or initiating any major offense, but it’s also unclear how he can stand up from this.

Oliveira, methodical, looking for a way to pass. We’ve got a stalemate, a tense one, though. Oliveira bouncing to get his leg free, Chandler landing short shots from the bottom. He’s being smothered by Oliveira. Not much damage done, but clear round for Oliveira.

Round 2

Oliveira lands a hard leg kick. Front kick to the body scores for Oliveira. Chandler attacks the body, trying to get Oliveira to drop his hands. Big combo by Oliveira, that last punch caught Chandler off-balance and he slips to the mat for a second.

Another big right by Oliveira connects. Chandler literally has to sprint out of there. Another right for Oliveira scores, Chandler is just not seeing it. Left hand by Chandler, Oliveira hits him with a knee. Chandler throwing wild.

Takedown by Oliveira, incredible timing. Oliveira right into full mount against the fence. Oliveira staying heavy, giving Chandler zero room to breathe. Oliveira postures up and starts dropping elbows.

Chandler has zero options. More elbows from Oliveira. These are piecing Chandler up. A 12-6 elbow! It doesn’t connect, but that was cool. Chandler tries to initiate a scramble, but Oliveira is glue.

Masterful round for the former UFC champion.

Round 3

Fast kicks from Oliveira to the body and leg. He is in peak form tonight on the feet and on the ground. He’s just stalking Chandler.

Chandler with a couple of good leg kicks. Right uppercut by Oliveira. Chandler fires back, his hands low, he wants to draw Oliveira into a brawl. Good left hand jab from Chandler. Huge uppercut by Oliveira. Chandler lands a right hand. He’s losing, but he’s still in this.

Another good knee from Oliveira. He is punishing Chandler on the fence. Body lock by Oliveira, Chandler definitely grabbing the fence. He has to let go though and Oliveira takes him right down. Oliveira in back control. Uh oh.

Half a round to go and Chandler has to survive Oliveira on his back. Oliveira with elbows from behind and then a body punch. He’s got a body triangle locked in tight. He’s peppering Chandler with short punches. Chandler is having a bad time!

Oliveira on the chin, but Chandler fights out of the submission attempt. He makes it to the bell, but Oliveira is dominating.

Round 4

Chandler lets a looping left hand go. Another one connects. Oliveira lands a left of his own and pressures Chandler. Jumping knee by Oliveira. There’s the takedown attempt by Oliveira. He maneuvers to Chandler’s back and trips him to the mat. Chandler in trouble again.

Oliveira just an octopus on Chandler’s back. Chandler can only turtle up to defend. Oliveira locks in the body-triangle again. He’s not rushing any offense. Why should he?

Chandler tries to power out and scramble, but Oliveira’s jiu-jitsu is perfection. He’s glued to Chandler with 90 seconds to go.

Oliveira hunting for the choke. It looks like he’s close to getting that arm under the chin. Chandler fights him off again. Oliveira holds position for the remainder of the round.

Round 5

Oliveira scores with a counter knee. Chandler circling, looking for an opening. Oliveira slows him with a front kick to the body. Straight punch from Oliveira after whiffing on a takedown attempt. Right hook by Chandler. Then a left. Another right lands. That hurt Oliveira.

Oliveira shoots for a takedown. Chandler is on top throwing hammerfists and it looks like every single one is hitting the back of the head. What is the referee doing???

Chandler in Oliveira’s guard, relentlessly searching for ground-and-pound. Oliveira slows him with a triangle attempt. They’re back on the feet with less than two minutes to go.

Chandler lands another good punch. Clutch takedown attempt by Oliveira and he gets it. He’s on Chandler’s back and he’s just going to ride this one out.

Chandler stands up with Oliveira on his back. He walks Oliveira to the middle of the ring and leaps back to slam Oliveira to the mat. He does it again and Oliveira is smiling and shaking his head. Very fun, silly sequence to end the fight.
